The Robust Electromagnetic Field Testing and Simulation Laboratory at Oklahoma State University was founded in 2001 and has as its focus the measurement and modeling of electromagnetic phenomena of all kinds. From unmanned aerial systems (UAS), antennas, RFID, to microwave acoustic tomography for prostate cancer we are interested in developing methods to characterize and extend the useful application of technology to solving challenging problems.
The REFTAS lab (Robust Electromagnetic Field Testing and Simulation) at OSU provides key knowledge, experience and methods to define the optimal characterization metrics. Past work with the NAVY (SPAWAR and NAVAIR) has led to advances in measurement and simulation validation of models for rapid determination of potential susceptibility to hostile and friendly electromagnetic threats. The use of simulation tools cannot be relied upon without a careful validation campaign targeted at characterizations that are measureable. The emphasis on high caliber measurement facilities is absolutely critical to achieve this goal. OSU has considerable national (and international) visibility in High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) and Reverberation Chamber (RC) application and operation. Our scholarly contributions have been of considerable value to aerospace applications and have focused on the ability of an external threat to couple current onto wire structures carrying command, control, and communication data. The emphasis on model validation is a key aspect of OSU's strength that has gone considerably beyond the publication of results in refereed journals. The principal investigators are officers on IEEE Standard 1597 (Standard for Validation of Computational Electromagnetics Computer Modeling and Simulation) and we continue to participate heavily in international professional societies (IEEE EMC) to ensure ongoing rigor in methods to evaluate models to predict electromagnetic phenomena of all kinds.
